The San Blas Islands are a tropical paradise – picture perfect beaches, clean water, and coconut palms. But unlike the glossy, high-end vacation brochures you’ve probably seen before, these islands are inhabited by indigenous Kuna people whose culture is still alive and well in modern times. The experience is not only authentic, but also unique and incredibly rewarding.
You’ll want to give yourself enough time to truly immerse yourself in the San Blas Islands, and to do that you’ll need at least 4 Days/3 Nights. Unless you’re planning on chartering a private yacht from Panama City, the best way to visit San Blas is by joining a tour from Panama City that includes flight, accommodation, and meals.
A good option is the 2D/1N San Blas Day Tours Overnight with Island Hopping and Kayaks, which departs daily from Panama City for Carti, the main port of the San Blas Islands. This tour offers a private cabin over the ocean for one night, a full day on Isla Wailidup where you can swim, snorkel, rent kayaks and paddle boards, and eat delicious local food.
From there, you’ll visit several other islands during the day and swim in crystal clear waters. You’ll be able to lounge on the beach, explore the islands and their jungles, or take in a stunning view from the top of Isla Perro Grande. You’ll also be able to snorkel at the Natural Pool on Isla Pelicano, which is a sunken island that lets you stand waist deep in the clear water and is home to a variety of fish and sea stars.
Throughout the trip, you’ll be served traditional Panamanian dishes and enjoy the beautiful views of the islands and water. You’ll get to try the fried fish of the day, rice and salad, and on occasion lobster (upon availability).
You’ll also learn about the Guna Yala culture from your guides and experience life as a Kuna person. Expect a lot of interaction with the locals, as these are not your typical tourist islands. You may even see things that shock you – like toilets that go straight into the water – but these are all part of the adventure.
